A new design from eBay and PayPal aims to make it easier for consumers to buy everything from online books to newspaper subscriptions, and have the grasp show up on their phone bill. It’s another shot, analysts say, in the battle to control what is turning into a market significance hundreds of billions of dollars.
The PayPal Carrier Payment Network, announced this week at the Motorized World Congress in Barcelona, also aims to give merchants a bigger allot of the revenues generated by mobile payments.
In a blog post, PayPal’s David Marcus says the assembly is hoping to push mobile purchases for a broader range of products than the online games which have dominated the shop until now.
“While convenient for consumers, this method of payment has inherent challenges for other digital goods merchants — such as digital books, music, dating and please — to adopt as a primary payment method,” wrote Marcus, who said that unwieldy fees are a part of the problem.
