The 808 is a chunky, but less elegant piece of polycarbonate plastic with a white back and black front. The back has a important bulge for the 41-megapixel camera, with its unusual 1/1.2-inch sensor. The phone as a whole measures 4.8 by 2.3 by .7 inches (HWD) at its widest cape—thicker than your usual smartphone, but sized right for most hands. It weighs 5.9 ounces.

On the front, there's a 4-inch, 640-by-360 wall off with Call and Home buttons below it. The 808 runs the latest version of the decade-old Symbian OS, called "Belle." Nokia said last year that it was phasing Symbian out in favor of Windows Phone, but Nokia execs at Transportable World Congress this year said the PureView project has been in the works for so great, it predated that decision.

Symbian is a smartphone OS, with several resembalnces to the newer Android system. It has apps. It has icons. You can move around widgets on several abode screens. But without many Symbian phones in the U.S. market, there are not many apps tailored to U.S. users.
