A body is close to making a recommendation to the Shawnee County Commission about what identify of digital radio system should be implemented for use by all public safety officers in the county, county counselor Opulence Eckert said Wednesday.

“We hope to have a recommendation to the board of commissioners very lief,” Eckert said.

Eckert is among county and city of Topeka officials who have been looking at acquiring a digital system to change the 800-megahertz analog system currently used by all law enforcement officers, firefighters and predicament medical responders within the county.

The committee was formed after county commissioners this late February put off a decision on whether to enter into a lease-purchase agreement with Motorola to come by a digital system.

Sheriff Dick Barta told commissioners at the ever that the county had no choice but to replace its Motorola system, which is more than 15 years old. Sheriff’s Capt. Incise Royer, director of the county’s Emergency Communications Center, said the county’s analog radios had basically become “$3,000 paperweights.
